Accountant Faces Charge of Murder
STEWART ISLAND TRAGEDY REMANDED TO JANUARY 19 Press Association. INVERCARGILL. To-day. At the Police Court this morning, Arthur Victor Valentine, accountant of the Bluff Harbour Board, was charged with the murder of Andrew Josey, a Javanese fisherman, 80 years of age, at Paterson’s Inlet on December 14. Accused, who appeared in a distressed condition, panting for breath, was remanded on the application of the police until January 19.
A Press Association message of December 15 stated:—*‘A murder of a savage nature was perpetrated at Horseshoe Bay, Stewart Island, at 5 a.m. yesterday, the victim being Andrew Josey, a Javanese fisherman, over 80 years of age, and a well-known identity. Arthur Valentine, who was a trustee of Josey’s estate, has been arrested and charged with with murder. Josey was found dead with his features terribly disfigured by some blunt instrument, and the floor splashed with blood, showing that there had been a terrible struggle for life. Valentine, who was in bed, was arrested and brought to Bluff by steamer, where he was charged with wilful murder and remanded till December 22.
