NAPIER’S UPHILL FIGHT GRAMMAR’S LONG LEAD At the end of yesterday’s play in the Heathcote Williams cricket match, Auckland Grammar had established a very strong position. To Auckland’s first innings of 382, Napier replied with 182. The Napier boys opened their first innings at 2.45. The scoring, in direct contrast to Auckland Grammar's, was very slow. Just when he appeared to be getting set Gower was run out for nine. IN AND OUT BATTING Craig then joined Cowan and runs came more freely. The latter played careful cricket, but was caught when 27. T. Reaney, the Napier captain and a Hawke’s Bay representative, was the next man. After a nice display Craig was clean bowled by Kenny for 44, and in the next over Reaney wq.s clean bowled by Reid for four. A single to Bradley brought the century up after 100 minutes’ play. Then a straight ball from Kenny beat Gilbertson all the way. Kenny joined Bradley, but runs only came slowly, w'ith occasional boundaries. The latter placed his shots well, but he . was caught behind the sticks, for a nice 21. Kenny survived an appeal for a catch behind the wicket off the first ball of the next over. He made a good stand and added a valuable 34 before he was run out through a smart return by Whitelaw.
Tho next man, Beuth, was run out before he had scored, and Brown made 11 before he was caught by the wicketkeeper. The last man was clean bowled, and the innings closed at six o’clock for 182. NAPIER FOLLOWS ON. With a deficit of 200. runs on the first innings, Napier followed on this morning, T. Reaney, the captain, and Gower opening. With strong cutting and driving Reaney soon became set and repeatedly found the boundaries. Gower was caught off Cashmore for a patient 10. Craig joined Reaney, and runs came steadily. In. smiting Cashmore to the boundary Reaney was brilliantly caught by Reid off Cashmore. His score of 55, made in 45 minutes, included nine boundaries and one six. With a single, Craig brdught the century up after ah hour’s play. Cowan, who began cautiously, occasionally opened his-shoulders. When 32 Craig gave a chance that was not accepted. He was then stumped off Cashmore for a nicely-played 34. Tho next man, Gilbertson, was stumped oft' the next ball, and four w ets were down for 121. Two runs la. Bradley was caught off Cashmore, without scoring.
Tho fielding of the Auckland team was very keen. Owens, the Auckland ’keeper, had his third victim when he stumped Kenny, off Cashmore, H. Reaney joined Cowan. After playing cautiously for some time Reaney was clean-bowled by Cashmore for 16. Cowan continued to peg away at the bowling and brought his 50 up with a beautiful sixer. The other man, Beuth, gave a chance at eight that was not accepted. At the luncheon adjournment the score was 185, Qowan being 54 and Beuth S. NAPIER AVERTS INNINGS DEFEAT
After lunch a four to Cowan brought tho second century up, and saved an innings defeat. He was caught for 82, which included 11 boundaries and one sixer. The innings closed for 225, leaving Auckland Grammar 26 to make to win.
