Tenders for Cable.—The Railway Department is inviting tenders for cable, etc., by r advertisement in this issue.
Dental Clinic.—lt has been decided at Morrinsville to hold street markets to raise £2lO for a dental clinic.
Towing Timber Rafts.—A regulation shortly to begazetted forbids the towing of timber rafts more than 300 feet long in harbours.
Recovering From Injury.—Latest reports say that the victims of the recent motor accident in Awakino Valley are progressing favourably.
Little Boy Drowned A four-year-old boy, Roy Hawkins, was found drowned in a tidal creek near Te Puke on Monday’.
Christmas at Taupo.—Many visitors are expected at Taupo for the holiday’ fishing. Hotels are full, and camping grounds are being provided.
New Ambulances.—The Auckland Hospital Board has received permission from the Minister to spend £415 16s on the purchasing of two motorambulance bodies.
A Good Record.—Out of the 93 pupils of Standard VI. at the Otahuhu Public School who sat for their proficiency examination, there was not a single failure.
Body in Harbour. —The Invercargill police yesterday afternoon recovered from the harbour a body, beileved to be that of a man answering to the names of both Thomas Scot and Muir. —Press Association.
Smoking on Vehicular Ferries.— Doubting the Harbour Board's right to enact a by-ljtw prohibiting smoking on vehicular ferries, the board's solicitors have advised that the Minister of Marine should be asked to make the necessary regulation.
Cargo Handled.—Figures prepared by the traffic manager for the Auckland Harbour Board show that the total of cargo handled for November was 105,050 tons, an increase of 16,162 tons on the previous year.
Pharmacy Exams.—The pass list for Auckland in the pharmacy examinations held in November and December, 1927, is as follows:—Section B: A. G. Cornish. Section C: B. L. Brown, H. P. Ensor, N. C. Maddox and F. W. Page.
Fatal Collision.—At the inquest held concerning the death of Nelson Jackson, a single man aged 25, who received fatal injuries in a motor-cycle collision near Te Awamutu on December 1, the evidence showed that the other man, Eric Fraser Storey, was travelling on his right side of the road. Jackson suffered a severe fracture of the skull
Collision at Penrose.—A car driven by Mr. L. E. Fowler and a lorry owned by Messrs. Harison and Gash, Newmarket, and driven by Mr. M. Abernethy, collided on th« Penrose overbridge about 4 p.m. yesterday. Both vehicles were badly damaged and had to be towed away. Wrist Gashed By Saw.—Yesterday afternoon, Sidney White, aged 17. was treated at the Auckland Hospital for a severe gash in the right wrist caused -while operating a circular saw at the Taupo Totara Timber Company’s mill in King Street, Newmarket. Several stitches were inserted. He was taken to hospital by the St. John Ambulance. Woman Dead in Kitchen.—At the inquest on Eleanor E. Baynon, a single woman, aged 44, who was found dead in the kitchenette of her parents’ residence in St. Albans, Christchurch, early yesterday morning, the coroner. Mr. H. A. Young, returned a verdict of death from gas poisoning, which may have been accidental.
Strawberries Suffer.—The., dry weather prevailing is playing havoc with the strawberry crop at Xorthcote. Some idea of the water used to prolong the crop may be gathered from the fact that one large grower at Xorthcote has used in a fortnight 168.000 gallons registered by meter. The borough pumping plant at L;«ke Takapuna is working two shifts to cope with th* emergency.
