POSITION IN GREAT BRITAIN DISCUSSION IN COMMONS By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. . LONDON, Monday. In the House of Commons, Mr. Thomas Johnston, member for Dundee, on behalf of the Labour Party, proposed the following: motion: “That the long-continued unemployment of one million workers is a matter of the gravest national concern, which calls for a comprehensive national policy to stimulate production and to relieve industry in the necessitous areas of its exceptional burdens.”
The Minister of Labour, Sir Arthur Steel-Maitland, in replying, said he was ready to bet that unemployment would be down to 4 per cent, by 1932, or to 3 per cent, by 1933. The motion was reiected by 256 votes to 102.—A. and N.Z.-Sun.
