town, Massachusetts, said six men were known to be alive of the 43 who were entrapped in the submarine S 4, when she was rammed and sunk on Friday by the destroyer Paulding, off Cape Cod. These men were in the torpedo room of the vessel. The fact that they were alive was ascertained by a diver, who made signals by tapping on the outside of the hull of the submarine. Communication was established by means of code hammer-tapping. A tapped reply was received from the imprisoned men saying six men were alive within the torpedo-room. The message added: “Gas not bad, but air is. Will you be long now?’’ There was no evidence of anyone being alive in the other parts of the submarine. The naval tug luka, which was towing three pontoons to the scene, lost cne in the heavily running seas. The waves in the area of the disaster are so high that rescue work is almost impossible. Naval men are working frantically against the appeals of the imprisoned men to “please hurry.”—A. and N.Z.Sun.
