WORK AT AWAPUNI
GRAND KNIGHT’S TRIAL GALLOPS A GOOD MILE Press Association. PALMERSTON N., To-day. A light drizzle was falling early for track work at Awapuni this morning. Activities were largely restricted to local horses, few visitors having yet arrived. The grass and the course proper were open, the trestles being 45ft out. The plough was in good order, although not fast. Gaze Williams’s team was the first to work, Grand Knight, having Staghunter as a companion over the early portion, being brought home by Shot Silk, tVio horses working the .reverse way. Grand Knight was slow to move, but the pair were on terms going out of the straight. Crossing the top Staghunter’s saddle slipped and he was pulled up. Shot Silk hurried the Auckland Cup candidate along over the last live furlongs to do the journey in 1.49.
Sir Fanciful and Phantasy were sent three-quarter pace on the plough and Lady Faye worked alone on the same track. Th© latter staked herself a few days ago, but appears to be making a good recovery. Standard left half a mile behind m 52. He will not make the West Coast trip, but race at Manawatu on the second and third days. Bisgra, from the same stable, will figure in the Juvenile Handicap the last day. Powhiri and Kedbank did pace work : on the plough, running home strongly. Shining Star and Broad Acre were ! companions over five furlongs, their , time being 1.7 4-5. From a moving start Shining Star had an advantage j from the jump-out, finishing a shade ih j front. I Superb King was worked on the j plough and is at present lame in the rear hind leg. Capitulation, Blimp and Duke Abbey covered a mile, running the last seven furlongs in 1.43. Birkie and March On, who do not claim immediate engagements, left five furlongs behind in 1.9 2-5, Birkie winning easily. WILD PIGEON’S EFFORT Wild Pigeon, Some Lad and Mister Gamp were sent over a mile in 1.49 4-5. Some Lad was the early pacemaker, Mister Gamp being slow' to find his feet, although he was on terms with Wild Pigeon along the back. Turning for home Wild Pigeon ran up to Some Lad and led him home by a length. Mister Gamp was three lengths further back. Crown Area, who was not accepted . for on the first day, galloped with Moregas and Wanderlust. Moregas was tender in front. Skyrider and Desert Lad left the last j five of six furlongs behind in 1.11 2-5, fbe former, who had an advantage in | weight, finishing a shade in front. Lin Arlington registered 1.7 for five I furlongs. Del Sarto was worked on the plough, j doing a couple of solid rounds. He ! may compete in a hurdle event on the ■ concluding days. Piuthair, Kilmiss and Novaro were associated in a gallop on the plough over a mile and a furlong. The trio were together to the straight entrance, with Novar on the inner and Piuthair on the outside, where Piuthair and Kilmiss drew clear, the former finishing \ a shade in front, and she appeared to j 1 , be going well.
