TEACHER RETIRES

FORTY YEARS’ SERVICE To have given nearly 40 years’ faithful service in the teaching profession is the proud record of Miss J. Grant, senior lady assistant of the Devonport School, who will retire on superannuation at the end of January. Miss Grant joined the staff of the school in 1902. She first took up teaching at the Normal School, and subsequently became a mistress of the Onehunga and Parnell Schools. Her energy, enthusiasm, and ability, besides her sympathetic understanding of children combined to make her an ideal teacher and one loved and respected by her pupils. Her retirement will be a loss to the profession in Auckland. On Friday the school committee staff, pupils and many friends assembled to say farewell. Miss Grant was presented with a gold wristlet watch. A high tribute was paid by the headmaster, Mr. R. Carnachan. Not only was she held in high esteem for her professional ability as a teacher, he said, but she had earned the approbation of all for her outside activities, which had been far-reaching and had a great influence for good in the welfare of the district. Mr. J. Kew Harty, chairman of the school committee, expressed his regret at the loss of Miss Grant’s services. He hoped she would enjoy her well-earned leisure for many years. On behalf of the committee. Mr. Harty then presented her with a fine travelling rug.
