Senators Not Guilty

RECEIVED NO GOLD FROM MEXICO “SLUSH FUND” CHARGES By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.33 a.m. WASHINGTON, Mon. Senator J. T. Robinson, Democratic leader, informed the Senate that the evidence as to the Mexican “slush fund” disclosed conclusively that the four Senators named had not “received one dollar or tendered one cent” in connection with such a scheme, in the documents presented by William Randolph Hearst.—A. and N.Z.-Sun. A Washington cablegram of Thursdav last_ read as follows: — William Randolph Hearst furnished the Senate Investigating Committee with documents purporting to show that a "slush fund” was provided by President Calles, of Mexico, for four United States Senators. He named them as James Thomas Heflin (.Alabama), Robert Marion La Follette (Wisconsin), William Edgar George Borah (Idaho), George William Norris (Nebraska). Dudley Field Malone, of New York, was named as the Mexican financial agent. Immediately the names were mentioned. Senators Borah, Heflin and La Follette appeared before the committee, and denied that they ever received money from such a source, or that they had been approached by anyone who might have been interested in such an offer. Senator Norris is ill at home. His friends denied the charge on his behalf, and moved to secure a statement from him.
