Great Ponsford
MASTER BATSMAN’S FINE INNINGS “STEADY AND UNFLURRIED” By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright, SYDNEY, To day. Commenting on W. H. Ponford's record-breaking innings of 437 for Victoria against Queensland, the “Morning Herald” says: “Throughout his innings, Ponsford was steady and unflurried, and at the conclusion the crowd rose and cheered him. “His was the innings of a master batsman, for after lunch, when strict leg theory was adopted by the bowlers. Fonsford stood well away on the leg side, and frequently patted the ball through the slips from that position. Old‘cricketers compared him in that regard with Trumper—and what greater praise could be bestowed? Apart from securing the runs, it was a magnificent physical performance to stand at the crease and defy the wiles of the Queensland bowlers for nearly two days. “Ponsford may lack the polish of Trumper, the daring of Macartney, and the hard hitting of Lyons, but in the matter of run-getting he is supreme.” The “Morning Herald" adds: “Ponsford’s record in Sheffield Shield matches is remarkable. He has batted 31 times, has twice been not out, and has scored 2,921, au average of 190.6.” —A. and N.Z.
