Effort to Solve Transport Problem

LOCAL BODIES TO CONFER CONFERENCE ON WEDNESDAY Endeavours are to be made on Wednesday to secure a solution of the city and suburban transport system, which has been causing the local authorities in the outlying districts, as well as the City Council, a great deal of concern. The local bodies remain insistent in their demand for services to the districts inadequately served by trams, and the council figuratively sits tight on the proposals it made to these bodies recently. “You guarantee the running cost and we will put on the services,” is the attitude of the council. Now that the smaller bodies have rejected the council’s proposals, the council has invited them to confer on Wednesday to see if some satisfactory alternative to the present deadlock can be arranged. No time is being lost, because it is recognised that during the holiday rush greater and more frequent services will be required to carry the people of Greater Auckland. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, met the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, and members of the City Council this afternoon in regard to certain questions affecting the city, and it is more than likely that transport will be discussed. The deputation was conducted privately.
