BETTER RELATIONS WITH HOME PEOPLE

MR. AMERY’S VISIT ENDS On the eve of the departure of the Secretary of State for the Dominions, the Hon. L. M. S. Amery, the Flume Minister, the Kt. Hon. J. G. Coates, expressed the conviction that as a result of the visit relations between New Zealand and the Old Country will be even better than in the past, because of a better understanding by the authorities at Home of the position of this Dominion. When a man takes the trouble to come such a long way to become acquainted with the thoughts and aims of the people, good must eventuate, and the questions that had been discussed during the stay in this country of Mr. Amery would establish a better basis upon which to work. Many things had been discussed confidentially and disposed of, Mr. Coates said, and in addition the possibilities of closer land settlement. migration, Pacific cable, together with general Imperial communication, questions affecting the New Hebrides, and the supply of phosphates from Nauru and Ocean Islands had claimed the attention of the authorities. “I feel sure that Mr. Amery is going Home with a better conception of the Empire, because of his grasp of New Zealand’s outlook and general requirements,” Mr. Coates said.
