Markets and Money

A Review for Business Men

ON THE ’CHANGE HIKURANGI COALS FIRM DEMAND FOR BONDS A quiet tone was registered on 'Change this morning and little business was put through. The attention of the more speculative element is directed to a few small parcels of mining, but no noteworthy change in the market is recorded. Banks, though quiet, remain in good tone, and New Zealands continue to be dealt with at 59s 3d. Hikurangis also continue to receive attention on a market with any movement upward. In miscellaneous, Farmers’ Fertilisers have been done at 81s 6d and Wilsons Cements have been put through at 375. Gilt-edged securities remain in good tone and meet with a steady demand. IN THE MARKET PLACE INCREASED ACTIVITY DEARER STRAWBERRIES Business in practically every department is brisk in the city marts. A particularly heavy demand has set in for poultry, and greater activity is registered in the fruit section. Plums, with an easing off of supplies of the early varieties, have firmed in price. Gooseberries are also slightly firmer. Supplies of strawberries are tightening up and higher prices can be looked for by the end of the week. Bananas have advanced in price and supplies for the Christmas trade should not be over-plentiful. The Maunganui arrived this morning with a small consignment of fruit, ex Sydney, chiefly oranges and cherries. This will go on the market early this afternoon Healthy business is recorded in the fieid and garden produce section, though no great increase in turnover is reported. Poultry is coming forward in large quantities and meeting with an increasing demand as the holiday season approaches. Prices for good table birds are firm with any tendency upward.
