Athletic Meeting at Wellington
QUEENSLAND REPS. COMPETE JENKINS DEFEATS PARKES WELLINGTON, Sunday. The evening athletic sports were held on Saturday in cold weather, with a very strong southerly wind, and drizzling rain. The ground was in good order. Several centre champions ran, and also th© Queensland representatives. There were only two or three hundred spectators. The high jump and ladies’ relay had to be abandoned owing to rain. In the 120 yards hurdles F. S. Ramson easily beat R. W. Lander, who tripped at the last hurdle. In the 100 yards, J. T. Fleming and C. H. Jenkins (Wellington), and W. Wall. L. Parker, and N. Grehan (Queensland) were the starters. In a great race, Jenkins beat Parker in lOsec dead. The 200 yards invitation was won easily by Jenkins in 24 4-ssec. In the 880 yards, C. B. Allan was first, with H. Newton, of Wanganui, five yards behind. The 440 yards was a great race, in which J. Cunningham beat B. K. Eastwood in 55 4-ssec. In the mile, A. D. Priestly beat H. Gordon by 10 yards in 4min 54sec. A 440 yards relay race between Wellington and Queensland was won by Wellington. J. Carswell was the most successful cyclist. ON THE WING . SATURDAY’S PIGEON FLYING THE NORTHERN CLUB The Northern Club’s race for the 1927 old bird championship, flown from Johnsonville, was won by Air. F. Coster’s r c c Silent King, 1,406.7yd5; Mr. H. Crowhurst’s Le Pagne, (1,406.6 yds, second; Mr. W. Knight's b c h Miss Virginia, 1,406.4yd5. third. Messrs. Webb and Walker win the 1927 old bird average, while Mr. Coster secures the Weston Cup. PONSONBY CLUB The Ponsonby Club’s old-bird championship which closes the old-bird season was flown from Johnsonville. Results: M. Keane’s b c c Ascot Pride, I.3S9yds per min, 1; W. Billings’s blk c Black Pirate. 1,361.9yd5, 2; J. Green’s b c c Silver Streak, 1,361.7 yds, 3. PREMIER CLUB The final race of the Premier Club was also flown from Johnsonville, and was won by Mr. H. Riggs’s blk c c Golden Minstrel, 1,355yd5; Mr. J. Green’s r c c Silver Rain, 1,352yd5, second. Mr. C. Ryan’s beph Miss Tui, I, third.
