CAROL CONCERT

SATURDAY’S PROGRAMME Tho Christmas spirit was well in evidence at the Town Hall on Saturday night, when a carol programme was submitted by the Municipal Choir, assisted by local artists. The programme was well varied with traditional airs, and also some ot tin more modern carols. In every respect it was one worthy of the occasion. The choir opened with Wainwright’s “Christian's Awake,” followed by “I Saw Three Ships,” one of the ancient carols which never fail to make a popular appeal. Very nicely handled by the choir were “The First Nowel,” “0 Gladsome Night” from Sullivan’s “The Golden Legend,” and Bridge's "Cradle Song,” even balance and good tonal effects always being in evidence. Other popular choir numbers were “The Holly and the Ivy” (Broughton), Tschaikowsky’s “Once Long Ago” and Parry’j “Welcome Yule.” With his organ solos Mr. Maughan Barnett once again provided a splendid exposition of the organist’s art. His own fantasia on “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” was an excellent performance. In response to an insistent recall Mr. Barnett played the traditional Christmas hymn, “Adeste Fidelia.” His other numbers were Bach’s “Pastorale” and “Improvisation” in the style of an old carol (Luard-Selby). Miss I-a Bosworth contributed several very enjoyable violin solos which were warmly received. Her “Ave Maria” (Schubert-Wilhemly) proved a very satisfying programme, also Tor Aulin’a dainty “Humoresque” and the Mozart-Kreisler “Rondo.” Mr. Barry Coney was in excellent T°ice, and hi., very appropriate numbers contributed not a little to the enjoyment of the concert. Easthope Martin's “The Holy Child” was sung Wth nice reverence, and O’ConnorMorria’e setting of the Eastern hymn, Alleluia," with inspiring effect. *" r - Leo Whittaker provided artistic Waaoforte accompaniments.
