CATTLE THIEF CONVICTED
CASE AT WHANGAREI (From Our Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI, To-day. William Nathan was charged in the Whangarei Court this morning with stealing three cows from a farm at Poroti. Eight witnesses were called for the prosecution. After length y argument accused was found guilty of stealing two of the cows, and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on each of the charges, the sentences to be cumulative. Nathan has been previously convicted. He was further charged with the theft of tools from neighbours. His wife, giving evidence in his defence, stated that she herself had sold the tools. The magistrate refused her evidence on the grounds of the conflicting stories given by the woman and her husband. Nathan was sentenced to a further 12 months’ reformative treatment on this charge, following on his other terms in prison.
