Gruelling, Cycling Race Test Under Adverse Conditions WIN FOR ALDRED Weather conditions were anything but uitable for road racing on Saturday at Mangere. The open handicap event decided by the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club attracted a field of 24 starters, and once again the limit riders filled the first three places. J. H, Wade, who won fastest time, put up a line ride, but he was over 30eec. behind the winners at the finish. Following is the result: 5a Mile Handicap.—L. Aldred f2min SOsec), 1; A. Reed (2min 30sec) 2; F. J. Hughes (2min 20sec) 3. Time, J6rain 58 3-ssec. Fastest time, J. H. Wade (lOsec behind scr.), 14min 40 2-ssec. LIMIT MEN CLEAR OUT The riders started- into the teeth of a howling sou’-wester, but shortly afterwards had it with :hem. The limit riders, W. Clarke. L. Aldred and A. Reed, went off very fast, but were quickly overhauled by F. G. Hughes, lOsec. behind; these four made the pace such a cracker that nothing in the race had any chance with them, finally running home easy winners of the first three places. W. Clark was dropped nearing the finish. S. Lichfield, who put in a great finishing sprint, headed off a bunch that included J. H. Wade, F. J. Casey and C. Gainsborough. The following also started:—W. AT THE BUTTS CITY AND SUBURBS CLUB VERRALL’S FINE SHOOTING The first shoot in the series for trophies presented by Messrs. G. fc>. Kent and N. Spencer was fired on Saturday by members of the City’ and Suburbs Rifle Club at 500 yards and 600 yards. A heavy wind prevented the use of the long-range targets. Splendid shooting was recorded in spite of the trying conditions, and H. J. Verrall’s 92 was a brilliant shoot, which won him the spoon easily. The scores registered at 600 yards by A. J. Pieterson and S. L. Cradock were also fine performances. G. G. Kelly had the distinction of being the first man to win the B grade from scratch, his effort being full of merit.
