MYSTERIOUS DANE
“DIPLOMATIC” SERVICE A MONTH’S GAOL By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Friday. The mysterious foreigner who was recently arrested for. not paying for his dinner at hotel, and who refused to rve his name, saying he was a member of a diplomatic service, has been 'aentified as a Dane, whose name is Ververs. He has been sentenced to one month’s imprisonment and recommended for deportation. The prosecution said Ververs stated that he came to London at the instigation of the Russian Communist, Levinsky, t obtain naval and military information, ir which he repeatedly visitea the United Services Club. Inquiries by Scotland Yard of various officers showed that a charge of espionage was unjustified.
Nevertheless, Ververs was an habitual criminal with five convictions. He was wanted by the police in Copenhagen for fraud. He did not pay his bills in London and repeatedly borrowed money from the staffs of the hotels in which he stayed.—A. and N.Z.-Sun,
