TOURIST TRAFFIC

LEAGUE KEEPS AN EYE ON THINGS NEW ZEALAND BACKWARD On account of some confusion that has occurred by the formation of a body with similar objects, the New Zealand Tourist League, Auckland, is to become an incorporated society. momentous decision in the life of the institution was made at the annual meeting last evening, which was conducted by six members, one of whom left before the meeting concluded. The small attendance did not deter members in their consideration of elaborately drafted rules, which were approved by those present. The rules embraced the objects of the league, and contained clauses regulating the machinery of the constitution.

The incorporation fee, a question of £2 2s, will come from a credit balance of £6 4s 4d which the chairman, Mr. G. M. Fowlds, admitted was not a very extravagant sum to play with. Nor did the small attendance delay the passage of several carefully prepared resolutions urging more or less important improvements to the tourist traffic generally. The Sydney representation of the New Zealand tourist traffic did not please the league, and a qualified person will be asked to improve things at that end. Advertising space is wanted in overseas magazines and newspapers; public works money is asked for the road to Orakei-Korako Springs. The preservation in their natural state of the volcanic cones of this city will be urged. The City Council is to be asked to consider making the new stadium site near tho Zoo a temporary camp lor motorists.

The eye of the league is focussed steadily upon the Park Board’s improvements to the accommodation at Tongariro National Park hostel, and the following resolution was passed: In regretting that a properly equipped hostel has not been erected in the park area, and noticing that the board proposes to make additional accommodation, the league trusts that, following the example of Canada and the United States, the design and materials will

be in keeping with the surroundings, and ir»t such as to offend the eye. Officers for the year are: President, Hon. G. M. Fowlds; vice-presidents, J. W. McLean, W. J. Broadfoot and P. Hayward; committee, G. Finn, A. A. Brown, A. S. Graham, 11. A. Johnston. A. J. Stallworthy; treasurer, G. M. Fowlds; secretary, T. Walsh.
