WANTED—A BAT

I’ve lain awake for hours and hours awatching at the grate, , But Santa Claus has lots to do and always comes so late, And though I keep my eyes from sleep he always knows just when My eyelids droop, and down he comes, fills up my sock, and then He steals a march on other boys, inquisitive like me— A most surprising gentleman is *-anta Claus, you see. Last Christmas time he brought some toys, but he forgot a bat, And when I said my prayers each night I mostly asked for that — But I suppose he’s just like dad forgets what he is told. My schoolmate, Jim, says it’s because he thinks I am too bold. If I was Santa Claus, myself, I tell you what I’d do For all the boys who say their prayers and love their parents too. And help their mothers all they can, and clean their boots behind. And do not tease a pussy-cat, and to all beasts are kind, I’d give them all a cricket bat, and balls, I’d give them three. They’d say I was a nice old man if Sa.nta Claus was me. —A. WELLESLEY.
