WORK OF EACH ELEMENT
Nitrates affect the colour of the leaves and promote size and strength. If a tree or plant of any kind seems weak and fails to make progress, it is probably wanting in nitrates. On the other hand, a tree may be rendered fruitless, or a flower plant large and course, with no flowers, because there has been a toe libera] supply of nitrates, and its energies have been wasted in unprofitable growth. For fruit-tree growing, phosphates art indispensable for promoting fruit. In the cultivation of flowers, an application of liquid manure, with phosphates in solution, will be very helpful in promoting blooms. A fertiliser containing phosphates is necessary to be supplied every year to fruit trees.
