TROTTING CUP TRIAL JEWEL POINTER PLEASES At Epsom this morning ,T. Shaw gave tVio Cup candidate, Jewel Pointer, a good work-out over two miles, and the little chap greatly pleased the spectators present by his display. Amaris was the pacemaker over the first half of the trip, and then Direct Morning picked up the Logan Pointer horse scurrying away in front at top speed. The Cup candidate made a great effort over the final stage, and finished up a splendid task in determined manner. The track was on the heavy side, but the time recorded for the journey was good. Jewel Pointer was sent a stiff problem in taking on two such solid customers in turn as Amaris and Direct Morning, but the way he solved it stamped him as in the first flight of pacers. AT ELLERSLIE NO FAST TIMES RECORDED SILVERMINE GOES WELL Training operations at Ellerslie this morning were carried out in a very cold and bitter wind. The course proper—about 40 feet out—was the track most in use, and the tan was also available for trainers. COURSE PROPER King Emerald was the first to work, covering seven furlongs at an easy pace. A Railway candidate in Silvermine, and Antrim Boy, were partnered over hal" a mile, returning 52 1-5 for the journey. Silvermine was going very easily alongside his companion at the end. Nassock was slightly ahead of Serang at the end of six furlongs, in 1.24 2-5. Palmares and Bombarder were on terms over six furlongs, cut out in 1.22. Red Lion was in front of Avoncourt and Semicircle in a sprint over half a mile, in 53. Whaka King, Baby Bun and Speechless were associated in a mile task, the last seven furlongs taking 1.35 2-5. Whaka King put up a good effort, for he gave his companions a good break and was going easily ahead of them at the finish. Ralby was not asked to do her best over seven furlongs in 1.42. Piet and The Lover moved over seven furlongs, the last six taking 1.22. Sir Russell and Aggressive did well to run half a mile in 52 1-5. For a similar distance Kotahi came home in 52 3-5. Ahi Ngaro was not bustled to register 1.10 for five furlongs. Acushla and Judge’s Box were practically on terms in a five-furlong sprint in 1.8 1-5. The Fox and Bluespear were going nicely to register 1.24 4-5 for six furlongs. Royal Lover had a small advantage over Segment at the conclusion of half a mile in 52 4-5. Whakariti, Tidal and Corinthia finished in that order when they covered six furlongs in 1.25 2-5. Bannock and Yaqui finished on terms at the end of five furlongs run in 1.9. The last half-mile took 54. Beau Cavalier, who was picked up by Ardnalea, over the last half-mile, covered seven furlongs in 1.38. Ardnalea took 56 for the four furlongs, finishing three lengths in front of his companion. Diamond Queen was well clear of ' Marita in a six-furlong task, run in 1.26. The first two furlongs took 26 2-5. Royal Trek and Honelieke were companions over a mile, the last six furlongs taking 1.30. They were not asked to do their best at the end. ON THE TAN
Royal Mint and Sleepy Sol were on terms after encompassing a round. The Cup horse looks in the best of health at present.
Sir Roseberry and Right and Left were in company over a round run in 1.55. The former was slightly ahead of hit. companion at the end and appeared to be going a good deal the better.
Town Guard looked as if be could have improved upon his 1.7 1-5, which, he took for five furlongs. Goshawk was given a run over six furlongs, but was not asked to do his best.
RIDER FOR RAPIER T. GREEN WILL HAVE MOUNT The Cup favourite. Rapier, arrived at Ellerslie this morning looking in the best of condition to meet his future engagements. A good deal of controversy has arisen since it was known that Emerson would not make the trip as tq who would have the mount on Rapier. H. Nurse has now made definite arrangements, and T. Green, who applied, will be the rider. HORSES FOR AUCKLAND CHRISTMAS FIXTURE FIRST CONTINGENT ARRIVES Four horses claiming engagements at the Auckland Trotting Club’s big carnival, which opens on December 27, arrived by train from Wellington this morning. The quartette comprised Leo Mau-
ritius, a handsome black gelding, purchased by Mr. M. Moodabe in Australia, Ricardo, the well-known freelegged pacer from Christchurch, The Shrew and Raima, Hawke’s Bay representatives, who are familiar with Alexandra Park.. ,
