DUMPING OF BUTTER
BIG CONSIGNMENT FROM AUSTRALIA CANADIANS SEEK DUTY By Cable. —-Press Association.—Copyright. Reed. 10.58 a.m. OTTAWA, Thursday. The National Dairy Council formally applied to the Minister of Customs, the Hon. W. D. Euler, asking for the imposition of an anti-dumping duty upon 40,0001 b of butter which arrived at Vancouver on consignment on December 9 from Australia. This consignment is to be followed by a further one, similarly shipped. Mr. Euler promised consideration, and postponed his decision. Other officials say it is difficult to put anti-dumping duties on butter received on consignment, because no price is quoted. The Customs Act, in its dumping section, provides for additional duties where the goods are sold in Canafla at prices lower than those prevailing in the country of origin. However, under the National Products clause of the Act, the Government may fix arbitrary values for duty purposes on natural products, and this course is open to the Government in this case.—A. and N.Z.
