POPULAR SPORTSMAN

DEATH OF MR. A. W. EDWARDS (From Our Own Correspondent) TE AROHA, To-day. The death of Mr. A. W. Edwards, Secretary of the Te Aroha Jockey and Trotting Clubs, removes one of the best-known sporting figures in the province. For years he has owned racehorses and on one occasion won the double at Avondale with Manapouri. With Honesty he won most of the local district cups. For many years he was in business at Te Aroha and later took a hotel in Ponsonby. About eight years ago he removed to Tauranga and established himself in business, eventually again settling in Te Aroha, where he secured an opportunity as secretary of sporting clubs. By extreme courtesy, strict integrity and charitable disposition, together with keen advocacy of advancement in the Public life of the district, he was held in “top-rung” estimation by the whole community. He married Miss Lipsey and reared a large family. The Lipsey family are the founders of Te Aroha, and were responsible for many beneficent acts, including the gift of the picturesque domain grounds and mineral springs and church sites. The town and sporting clubs have lost a valued supporter and friend.
