LATE MR. THOMAS ASHBY
Mr. Thomas Ashby, who died at his home, Tuperiri Road, Epsom, yesterday, was born in 1867 at Tuhimata, near Drury, and was a son of the late Mr. Thomas Ashby, of Karaka. As a young man, Mr. Ashby joined the staff of the New Zealand Railways, and after 40 years’ continuous service retired from the position of inspector of permanent way five years ago. He had been stationed at Auckland, Whangarei, Te Aroha, Pukekohe and Petone.
Before retiring, he was in charge of the permanent way from Wellington to Masterton, and he also directed railway construction at the military camps at Featherston and Trentham, and the grade easement works in the Pukekohe district. For some vears ho was president of the Central Bowl-
ing Club, Petone, and secretary Petone District High School co tee. . . -pjfp, Mr. Ashby is survived by ms three sons and four daughters.
