ONEHUNGA PUBLIC SCHOOL’S FINE RECORD

BUCHANAN PRIZE WINNERS At the break-up of the Onehunga public school yesterday afternoon Nancy Jones and John Bedbrook were awarded the Buchanan prizes of £ 6 each for all-round educational attainments and general excellence in the qualities of leadership, self-reliance, and character. The prizes are the interest on a capital sum vested in the Public Trustee in perpetuity by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Buchanan, of Quadrant Road, Onehunga, and the high standard of proficiency annually attained by the sixth standard pupils of the school is evidence that the prizes are keenly contested. Among those present were Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., and Mrs. Jordan; the Mayor, Mr. W. C. Coldicutt, and Mrs. Coldicutt; and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Buchanan. A pretty incident took place when four tiny girls presented bouquets to Mesdames Jordan, Coldicutt, Buchanan, and Trayes. Mr. Trayes announced that every pupil in the sixth standard, 62 in all, had not only passed the examinaton, but had gained proficiency, and that for the past five years there here not been one failure in the sixth standard. Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan then presented the prizes to Nancy Jones and John Bedbrook, and the proceedings terminated with a very fine massed drill display by the school children.
