FARMER PRESIDENT’S TRIBUTE TO LABOUR

PREFERENCE TO UNIONISTS Press Association. WANGANUI, Thursday. Mr. W. J. Poison, Dominion president of the Farmers’ Union, referring to preference to unionists at a meeting of farmers, said that Labour is entitled to some regard for its persistent sacrifice. Unionism has undoubtedly been responsible for a general improvement in the sandard of living. It is easier to deal with a union properly organised than with one not so organised. Penalties for breaches of awards can be more easily imposed. “It is easier to devise legislation to control abuses of unionism with preference than without it,” he said. “United labour is generally intelligent and is more reasonable to deal with.

“To abolish preference would be as difficult as to destroy arbitration itself. The Court has seen the desirableness of encouraging preference. Authorities agree that it is better to make penalties for breaches effective than to attack preference itself.”
