MT. WELLINGTON RATES
DISTRICT’S APPREHENSION At a meeting of the newly formed Mount Wellington Ratepayers’ Association on Wednesday evening, Mr. Wesley Richards was elected chairman. Mr. J. C. Strachan was appointed secretary, and Mr. T. L. May treasurer. Concern ‘was expressed regarding the amount of rating likely to be forthcoming in the district. Statutory authority, it was explained, had been given to the Mount Wellington Road Board to spend the surplus of loan money on work not authorised in the original proposals, after the work was completed for which the loan was raised. The new work had been undertaken, with the result that there were no funds available to complete the work originally authorised. It was stated that ratepayers were apprehensive that a supplementary loan would have to be raised at a time when a water loan was contemplated. The association decided to approach the Minister of Internal Affairs regarding the unfinished work on the concrete roads.
The question of an investigation into all questions regarding the laying of the concrete roads in the district was deferred for further consideration.
