Commercials are firm with sales up to 29s 6d. N.Z. Insurances are active, and frequent sales are recorded at 40s 9d. In the miscellaneous section Wilsons Cements are again easier, though no sales have been reported. A better inquiry came in from several quarters for Farmers’ Fertilisers, the market closing with buyers in at 69s 6d. In mining, Moanataiaris are registering greater activity, and the market for both the paid-up and contributing scrip has an upward tendency. The demand for Government stocks and bonds is slightly easier. SALES REGISTERED At yesterday afternoon’s call:—On 'Change: Occidental Una (con.), Is. IN THE MARKET PLACE SOFT FRUIT PLENTIFUL SLOW SALE OF EGGS Soft fruits are coming forward freely in the marts. The strawberry season has passed its peak and supplies should ease off from now on. Eggs are slow of sale and easier values rule. Large quantities of hothouse tomatoes are now coming forward and the market has eased over the week. The beginning of the week saw the strawberry season reach its peak as far as quantity was concerned, and smaller supplies are now coming on the market. Values moved up 3d to 3id this morning. Plums and apricots are coming on the market freely at the moment and prices are more within the range of the average housewife. Only restricted supplies of peaches are offering. Limited supplies of hothouse grapes are coming forward, but bigger offerings should be seen from now onward. The fruit brought from 2s 9d to 3s 6d a lb. this morning. In the field and garden produce section ample supplies of most varieties of vegetables are available and meet with a steady market. New season’s onions have made their appearance, though in limited supply, and the quality as yet is not up to the standard of the imported product. Eggs are a drug on the market owing to the withdrawal of a large number of the big buyers. Many substantial contracts have been filled and. with the holiday rush upon them, bakers for the most part find it more profitable to use pulp for the time being. With only the smaller men operating the market has eased back to Is 6Jd a dozen. Turkeys and young cocks are meeting with a strong demand in the poultry sections and this market should be exceptionally busy for the next two to three weeks. r , e T oei yed under the hammer in follow'— Marts thls morning ranged as FRUIT Apples.—Sturmers, 9s to 10s a rasp- ? r an ln W A nfcsap ? l6s to 1?K - Delicio us! lbs to 17s; Gano, 14s. PIG MARKETING ASSOCIATION’S ACTIVITIES EXTENDING (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Thursday. Pigs to the number of 1,000 a week are being handled by the New Zealand Co-operative Pig-Marketing Association, the activities of which are extending. The president, Mr. S. H. Judd, has addressed no fewer than 42 meetings. Advice has been received that the Bay of Plenty Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited, had decided to join the association, and that it had arranged to cart pigs to the railhead at Rotorua. There are now 14 dairy companies connected with the organisation, and support from Whakatane has been promised. Advance payments are now made weekly. Some very satisfactory sales through the ordinary marketing channels have been made, especially for baconers. Pigs have been purchased Ly the association for the home market, for Australia and for England. BEET SUGAR SUBSIDY DECISION OF COMMONS By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Thursday. In the House of Commons, in the debate on the beet sugar subsidy, Mr. Walter Runciman, Liberal member for West Swansea, complained that it would reach tho staggering total of £20,000,000 in the course of 10 years. Moreover, the lions' share was going to tho factory-owners, not to the farmers. The Minister of Agricllture, Mr. ■VV alter Guinness, in justifying tho subsidy, said 19 beet factories were now in operation. The vote was agreed to.—A. and NZSun.
