TO-MORROW’S A.C.A. CRICKET
LAST MATCH THIS YEAR WILL SHORE’S COLOURS BE LOWERED TO-MORROW, the fourth matches of the season in the Auckland Cricket Association’s senior grade competition will be fought to a finish. In all but one case close finishes are expected, and keen, interesting cricket promises to be the order of the day, with rep. possibilities doing their best to impress the selectors before the Plunket Shield team is announced.
N'OKTH SHORE was very much surprised last Saturday to find that the United Suburban bowlers were more than a match for its strong batting side. With a big reputation at stake. Shore is not likely to take any chances to-morrow, and the fight at Devonport is likely to be a close one. Bucked up by the success of its bowlers last week, the young team has already got a sniff of victory, and Shores’ task will be no easy one. Williams, Martin and Kerr are a trio of bowlers as good as any in Auckland, and in view of the likely shortage of good bowlers in the rep. team, Williams stands a good chance of being given a try to prove his worth. It is announced that this promising trundler is leaving Auckland early next year to live in Petone. This ia indeed unfortunate for the Suburban team, and possibly for. the reps in years to come. Suburbs say, however. that there is every possibility of their ranks being strengthened in February by the inclusion of a good fast bowler from Wellington. The name of the player has not yet been disclosed, however. Suburbs are all out for 124. and Shore in its first strike has made 143. Can Dacre give his side a more substantial lead on the second innings? EDEN IN STRONG POSITION As the cards have turned up, Eden should not have much trouble in disposing of Grafton. The latter’s first innings on Saturday last was disappointing, and but for the fine halfcentury by Sloman, the Grafton men would have been in a sorry position. Eden, however, is playing right up to form now, and it is doubtful if there is any team in Auckland strong enough to stop it in its all-conquering way. Gillespie, the hero of many a match last year, showed a very pleasing return to form with the bat last week, and it will be interesting to see if he can keep it up. , _ « Mills, until the tour of the New Zealanders, was always looked upon as a bat, but it seems as though he is going to develop into a bowler. G. jj, Weir and his older brother, A. F. Weir, are both on trial for the reps, as also is Cooper. On to-morrow’s performances will depend to a great extent their chances of final selection. Last week Grafton was dismissed for 144 after a very stubborn fight was made by their opening batsmen, Horspool and Snedden, and these two may stand in the way of Eden to greater purpose to-morrow. Eden has lost three wickets for 242, with Brooke-Smith 63 not out, and A. Weir 39 not out. PARNELL SHOULD WIN Thanks chiefly to the fine display of Arnold Anthony with both the bat and the ball, Parnell is in a strong position in its game with Y.M.C.A., and it will take a big recovery by the Association men to avert defeat. With Bowley on the side, however, a great deal is possible, and if the Young Men’s bowlers can get rid of the remaining Parnell batsmen for a small total, Bowley and Elliott may be able to make up the first innings deficiency. It is a big task, however, and one likely to prove beyond the reach of Y.M.C.A. _
On No. 3* wicket at the park, Ponsonby is engaged in a great struggle with Varsity. Chiefly owing to Matheson’s fiery batting, the students are in a good position, and with N. C. Snedden and Langridge out, Ponsonby’s chances are not altogether greatly favoured. S. G. Smith, however, is still in and should be strike the form of last match at Devonport with one or two of the colts to help

him. Ponsonby may not be right out of the picture. Providing always for the unlikely to happen, wins can be fairly confidently expected by Eden, Parnell and University. The odds are even at Devonport, but one will be much surprised if Shore does not manage to pull the game out of the fire.

SWIMMING PONSONBY CLUB'S GALA DAY AT SHELLY BEACH "WitH swimming well under way now, and the competitors preparing for the New Zealand Championships, carnivals have been the order of late* On Saturday the Ponsonby Amateur Life Saving and Swimming Club will open its season with a carnival at the Shelly Beach Baths. A feature at this function will be the introduction of the rope lanes. These lanes are used extensively in other parts of the world, and by their use only six competitors can swim at a time. This does away with the crossing and erratic swimming so often met with in racing. Each competitor will be numbered to coincide with the number of his lane. The naval men in port ar© also catered for, and there will b© 100yds championship of th© navy, and a 200yds relay race for the Naval Plate. Th© other events include distance and sprint races, and should provide a good afternoon of sport.
