Parnell Swimming Club’s Carnival

EXCITING FINISHES PUBLIC SUPPORT POOR Considering the quality and excellence of the swimming at the tepid baths last evening, the attendance was exceedingly disappointing. The Parnell Swimming Club has endeavoured this season to carry on its work, but the p-olic support was not what it could have been. There was some excellent racing and exciting finishes, and the club deserves every credit for providing a splendid evening’s sport. The 220yds handicap was taken by G. Bridson, who gave an excellent exhibition. Miss Grant won the 66 2-3 yds ladies’ handicap after a thrilling race. A water polo match, Grammar v. Waitemata B resulted in a win for the former by two goals to one. Results: 220YDS OPEN HANDICAP First Heat. —G. Bridson, Grammar, scr., 1; L. Fairgray, Waitemata, 7 sec, 2; P. Brownlee, Waitemata, 14see, 3. Biidson’s was a brilliant swim. Time, 2.3 S 3-ssec. Second Heat.—R. de Loree, Mount Eden, 9sec, 1; R. Sellars, Helensville, 12 sec, 2; W. J. Stevens, Ponsonby, 12sec, 3. Time, 2.49 2-5. Final. —Bridson, 1; Stevens, 2; de Loree, 3. The only starters. Stevens maintained a good lead for three laps, when de Loree and Bridson came up. At the fourth lap Bridson passed de Loree and had reduced the distance considerably. Over the last 20 yards Bridson put in a great spurt and went on to win by a yard. Time, 2.40 4-ssec.
