One of the most curious railways that England has known was the South Devon Atmospheric Kailway. which ran between Exeter and Totnes for a short period in 1847. The trains were run entirely by air pressure, which was forced through a pipe laid along the centre of the track. Pumping stations, to provide an adequate supply of air, were provided at intervals of three miles.
