“The Rflessiah 9) SOLOISTS: Soprano MISS NAOMI WHALLEY Contralto MADAME IRENE AINSLEY Tenor MR. ERNEST McKINLAY Bass MR. DRAYTON VENABLES Yesterday, you read what the “Dominion” said about two of our “Messiah” soloists, now read what the “WelliQQton Post” says:— “MISS WHALLEY, on Saturday, deepened the impression she made at her previous appearance in ‘The Messiah’ in Wellington. She sang with notable expression as if fully understanding the sense of the words and the music clothing them. RELYING NOT SO MUCH UPON THE BEAUTY AND FRESHNESS OF HER VOICE AS UPON SYMPATHETIC* TREATMENT OF HER SOLOS. Joy, almost ecstasy, marked her singing of ‘REJOICE GREATLY,* and the right note of triumph was sounded all through M KNOW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVETH.’ “MR. McKINLAY sang WITHOUT TRICK OR AFFECTATION OF ANY SORT and with no apparent effort to bind the audience with his brilliancy. Intense feeling was put into ‘THY REBUKE* and ‘BEHOLD AND SEE.’ His rendition of ‘THOU SHALT BREAK THEM.’ was fine as a human conception of Divine indignation.” GREAT CHORUS ACCOMPANIED BY ORCHESTRA AND GRAND ORGAN. BOX PLAN NOW OPEN AT THE E. AND F. PIANO AGENCY. RESERVES: 4s, 3s (plus tax).
