BOARD V. COUNCIL

WAIKATO DIFFERENCE MAINTENANCE OF ROAD (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Tuesday. The dispute between the Waikato County Council and the Main Highways Board, after smouldering for some time, burst out with renewed vigour at the meeting of the county council to-day. The variance between the two bodies has occurred over the maintenance of the Ngarua-wahia-Ohinewai stretch of the Main South Road, for which the county council demands a subsidy of £ 3 to £l, while the Highways Board will only come to an agreement on a £2 for £1 basis.

As the outcome f of the discussion to-day the Waikato County Council decided to demand a commission to go into the matter. In effect its decision amounts to an attitude of defiance of the Main Highways Board. It was stated that the council repeatedly advised the board it would only pay ordinary maintenance in the event of the road being declared a county one. '
