North Shore May Have Transport Bd.
“AUTHORITY PROMISED” MR. HARRIS’S STATEMENT That a separate licensing authority under the Motor Omnibus Act would shortly be constituted for the North Shore boroughs was intimated by Mr. A. Harris, M.P., in the course of an address to the Birkenhead Borough Council last evening.
The Government has already given a promise, said Mr. Harris, that the necessary legislation would be passed to effect the grouping of the boroughs concerned into a No. 2 Licensing Authority. The new body when constituted would consist of seven members, comprising two representatives from Takapuna, two from Devonport, one each from Northcote, Birkenhead, and one from tlje Waitemata riding of Birkenhead and Takapuna. Mr. Harris stated that he had asked for time before legislation was effected to interview the various councils concerned, and had also been successful in obtaining the consent of the Devonport Borough Council to act as the licensing body until the necessary machinery was available for the proper constitution of the board. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Harris for his assistance in obtaining Government sanction to the proposal. NORTHCOTE OBJECTION Objection to the proposal made by Mr. Harris, M.P., that a North Shore local body should act as the licensing authority until such time as the new area was constituted, was raised by the Northcote Borough Council last evening. On the motion of Mr. P. J. Ryan it was resolved that intimation be forwarded to the Prime Minister and Mr. A. Harris, M.P., to the effect that until a transport board for North Shore comprising representatives of all districts concerned was set up by Act of Parliament it was preferred that the position remain as at present, and that the No. 1 Licensing Authority continue to act.
