RIVER LIGHTER SINKS

COAL LOAD RECOVERED A large coal lighter belonging to the Northern Steamship Company sank near the wharf at Paeroa on Wednesday. The craft was used for storing coal for the company’s steamers, and at the time had 20 tons of Westport coal on board. A portion of the coal was recovered at low water. Becoming lighter by removing the coal, the vessel rose to the surface of the water, and the balance of the coal was removed. Alongside the lighter was a large barge containing Christmas goods and general merchandise for Te Aroha and Morrinsville, and it was fortunate that the barge was cut adrift from the lighter before she sank.
