NEW BRIGHTON TROTTING

Summer Fixture To-Morrow

GOOD FIELDS ENGAGED

Thrilling Contests Expected SUMMER FIXTURE OF THE NEW BRIGHTON TROTTING CLUB OPENS ON- THURSDAY AND WILL BE CONCLUDED ON SATURDAY. THE MEETING IS AN IMPORTANT AND POPULAR ONE, AND SEVERAL HORSES CLAIMING ENGAGEMENTS AT ALEXANDRA PARE DURING THE CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL ARE RACING AT THE CANTERBURY FUNCTION AND THEIR FORM WILL BE CLOSELY FOLLOWED BY ENTHUSIASTS IN THIS PROVINCE.

The New Brighton Trotting Club, which holds two meetings each year, caters for the sport in an excellent manner, with the result that the summer and autumn fixtures are extremely popular with light harness owners, trainers, and the public. The December fixture at the seaside is always a good draw card, as many horses engaged at various parts of the Dominion are raced at this rendezvous, and their form is usually a good guide for their later prospects. The acceptances for the meeting which opens to-morrow are of a high standard both as regards quality and quantity, and -everything points to a successful function being recorded. The day’s sport will commence with the TRIAL HANDICAP (Harness)

This event is for square-gaiters, and 15 colour the card, with nine on the front line Of these, Taipoiti, Nelson Wood, Nancy McKinney, and Quickfire have all raced recently, and should be in good form. Taipoiti, owned on the West Coast, is a speedy trotter, but not always reliable, but in her more recent essays she has done better. Nancy McKinney was at Methven, and Quickfire was also in the money, while Nelson* Wood was second to Louisiana at Greymouth. Great Elect last season was never out of a place, and will be having his first run of the year. Sarsaparilla and We© Olga are capable of good efforts if in the humour, while of those further back Lady Fan, who won well at Wellington, and is now on 120 yards, should do best, and if she reproduces last Saturday’s form will be hard to beat. Favourites may be GREAT ELECT, TAIPOITI, LADY FAN.

The next event to create interest among backers will be the IMPROVERS* HANDICAP (Harness) Of £200; 1* miles; 3.32 limit.

Ten of the 18 runners will commence from the front, including the muchdiscussed and much-boomed Jean McElwyn; Great Form, who showed consistent form at Greymouth in October; Wairua, a solid customer; Panto, from whom big things were expected last season; and Auto Minto, who won the first time out last season, and failed afterwards several times. Alvira has been threatening to do things for some time, and Binscarth was prominent during the metropolitan carnival at Addington last month. Dillon Gold and Springtime are nicely placed, while Jim Logan may require a race or two to tune him up. Erin’s Royal will be dangerous, and Pluto put up some attractive performances last season. The back-marker, Quality, is in great fettle just now, and has come solid, and will keep those in front of her busy. Favouritism may turn toward GREAT FORM, QUALITY, BINSCARTH.

Preparations will then be made for the parade in the

This is the principal event on the card, and 18 acceptors promise to make an interesting race. Half a dozen figure on the limit, including Harold Burwood. who won the event last year. He has been showing something like his best form again, and wiU be hard to dispose of. Doctor Dillon appears to be on the improve again, and if right would take a power of beating. Menember and Stunt Artist may do better than they suggested last week, while William the Great should be capable of a better display than he gave in the Wellington Gold Cup. Peter Swift will make things interesting for the pacers, and Ouimet would only require to strike form to have a good chance. Taurekareka will have a large following, and his win at the Christchurch Cup fixture proves that he is back to form. He has pace, and can stay, and what beats him sliouli win. Another trotter in Money Spider will keep the hoppled contingent busy, and he will probably beat more than will beat him. Bonny Logan is staying on, and has recently finished in third money on two occasions over two miles. Countryman is not too reliable, but Golden Devon will have to be reckoned with when it comes to real business. If the coaster can pull out the last little bit more vigorously, he will get a slice of the stake. Concliff’s more recent displays did not suggest him as a good stayer, but toe fact that he is in the Auckland Cup hints that he will see it out all right. In a good betting race, the favourites may be TAUREKAREKA, BONNY LOGAN, GOLDEN DEVON.

With the speed kings out of the road, attention will be turned to the BOWHILL HANDICAP (Harness) Of £200; 1J miles; 2.53 limit.

Fourteen pacers of fairly good class will trv conclusions in this heat, the majority be*ng off the front mark. Maud Logan won at this fixture last year, and has not been heard of since, but her display was promising. Sungleam looked like coming back to form a while ago, and may have improved. Nipper is always cheeky in short distance races, while Auditress cannot be overlooked. The Author Dillon mare won well at the recent Greymouth fixture, and is sure to be a tough proposition. Pat Dillon, when right, is a speedy customer, and capable of making a bold showing. Loeanda General

has been seeking admission lately, and one of these days will not be denied, and Native Queen is a good one over a mile. Hoon Hay looks well placed, but has so often failed that backers must have grown tired of him. High Jinks is a speedy sort, and Epigram won nicely at Wellington. Favouritism points to AUDITRESS, EPIGRAMMAUD LOGAN. Speedy milers will next be got in readiness for the DASH HANDICAP (Harness) Of £200; 1 mile; 2.17 limit.

Thirteen good pacers grace the card in the mile dash, and the heat should produce an exciting contest. Three speedy sprinters, Lord Bingen, Ariki, and Daisy Pointer, are on the end, and of the trio backers may prefer Ariki, who will prove a tough customer. Harold Burwood is also engaged in this flutter, and Avenger cannot be pushed aside, although lie failed at Dunedin. Berenice showed encouraging form at Addington, and was consistent in securing a minor place, and may go one better to-morrow. Bing Boy is not short of pace, but lacks brains, while Kotuku Jack is not reli-. able.- Diamond Child is useful, but may want a race, and Albert Logan lias nothing to complain of. Bob Logan has raced with, luck against him, but seldom fails to get a situation, and Darknite is apt to come home any unexpected time. Machine Gun, from the back, will be in the picture when the post appears on the horizon, and when the machine closes the order may be ARIKI, BERENICE, MACHINE GUN.

After the echo of applause for the victorious candidate has died away, backers will make an effort to select favourites for the

This event introduces a dozen sound trotters, some of whom have been racing fairly prominently of late. Of the front pair, Randolf appeals more than Marvin Junior, and H. Gaskill’s representative, on Forbury Park form, will have to be seriously considered. Tiny Moony is overdue, and Wild Hebe was signalling a come-back at Christchurch recently. Nourmahal is always worthy of consideration, and seems to be going further with the business. Proud Ata has been a disappointment, but Our Ladv and Frisco Beau should be capable of a good effort. Cannonball, the hefty Reeftonite, is on the up grade, and promises to reach the highest square-gaited circles this season. Bonny Spec must have a Audominion and John Mauritius cannot be left out of the final reckoning. Public opinion may favour CANNONBALL, RANDOLF, NOURMAHAL. A good class of pacer will try conclusions in the

While the field is not strong in point of quantity, it has a powerful quality flavour, and should be one of the hardest finishes of the day. Bingen Lad has some form to recommend him, while Ouimet when ready is equal to pulling out a sudden 10 furlongs. Trimmer is a beauty over this distance, and his form at Cup time at Addington demonstrated Bennett has the West Coaster well. Logan Holme is one of the most brilliant over a short course in New Zealand when wound up, and he is evidently coming right. Concliff and Sea Pearl are nicely placed, while Loganwood is sure to be knocking when it comes to the final spurt. Acron would make it a spectacular race if he went off with the field, and Waitaki Girl will add interest to the race. When the chosen three are announced by the tote clerk, they may read LOGAN HOLME, TRIMMER. LOGANWOOD.

Numbers and drivers will then be hoisted on the board for the final event of the day, the ELECTRIC HANDICAP (Saddle) Of £200; 1 mile; 2.17 limit.

This is a mile dash, with the weight on top, and has drawn a field of 14. Eight have the right to lead off from the start, and should Pointalena hop away he will make it interesting for the remainder. Daisy Pointer is a speedy mare in saddle, and knows how to hop out of the slips. Native Queen can hurry, too, with the weight on top, while Loeanda Child is partial to this style of locomotion, and Lord Bingen has wpn in saddle. Bing Boy would only require to go right to make it awkward, and the same remark applies to Glandore. Kotuku Jack still does the wrong thing, but High Jinks is a good miler when dressed in his best. Firpo is likely to stop at the peg, but should he decide otherwise would keep all hands busy. Pan Yan is one of the useful type, and in such a field should be well in the limelight before the judge is reached. The final selection may be POINTALENA, DAISY POINTER, PAN YAN.

Well Done, Sububsl The two small scores at Devonport on Saturday were hardly unexpected

by those who knew the United Suburbs team, but to Shore supporters they came as something of a surprise. With but two exceptions, Suburbs possess no batsmen of more than very ordinary ability, but as a bowling and fielding side they rank with

any team in Auckland (as Shore found to its cost). The Association team has every reason to be proud of its performance, and the end of the season will no doubt see them much higher on the competition ladder than at present.

CRICKET AT PAPATOETOE Eden and Papatoetoe are virtually in the same position in the championsihp., the former having six points to their credit and the latter seven, so that an even game was expected when they met at Papatoetoe on Saturday. Eden were unfortunately two men short, but it is still anybody’s game, and next Saturday’s play will decide the issue. Papatoetoe’won the toss and went in to bat. Their first four wickets fell cheaply, the score book reading four for 19. The remainder stemmed the rot and the innings closed for 93. The best individual scorers were E. H. Burnside 28, Henderson 22, H. Swaffield 13 and P. Swaffield 12 not out. With the ball for Eden, Bouisson bowled a consistent length . and his figures, five for 19, speak for themselves. Eden scored their runs quickly and a good partnership by Webster and Bouisson promised well till the former went out to a doubtful decision behind the wickets. The innings closed eventually at 106. The best individual scores were Bouisson 33. Hook 17 and Cathrie 13. With the ball for Papatoetoe, Valentine, with six for 44. got the most wickets. In their second strike Papatoetoe are doing much better, having scored 46 for the loss of one wicket at the call of time-
