NEW SECRETARY FOR ASSOCIATION CODE

EX-RUGBY REFEREE MR. F. ADEANE APPOINTED The appointment of Mr. Frank Adeane, formerly a well-known Rugby referee, to the secretaryship of the Auckland Football Association, may signify the development of a wider understanding between the two old-established codes. Mr. Adeane’s appointment was approved unanimously last night by a special committee set up to deal with the subject. new secretary is best known as secretary of the Auckland Competitions Society, which post he took over in 1913, to relinquish it when he went abroad on active service. He resumed it two years ago. Mr. Adeane has been a prominent follower of many forms of sport, and has been secretary of the Rocky Nook Bowling Club. His football experience has been with the Rugby game, both as player and as referee, but he is not unfamiliar with Association football, and he brings to his new post an enthusiasm for amateur sport, as well as the requisite business qualifications. MR. DAWSON'S RETIREMENT The retiring secretary, Mr. L. C. H. Dawson, has resigned for business reasons, and the change in administrative headquarters will be effected on January 19. Mr. Dawson said this morning that, though he did not have time to retain the secretaryship, he would continue to follow the Soccer game, and would continue to assist as a referee. He has been associated with the game in Auckland evr since his arrival here nearly 40 years ago, and before that he played as a boy in the West Ham district, London. On arrival in Auckland Mr. Dawson found Rugby the ruling passion. Soccer was played on an out-of-the-way ground at Kingsland, and rarely attracted onlookers. Later,

in an effort to popularise the.sport, the association established, a ground at Bayswater. a proposition which proved to be most unprofitable. Gradually, however, Soccer came into its own, and three or four years ago, after a series of exciting club and international games, in several of which Mr. Dawson refereed, its popularity became assured. Until four years ago, when Mr. Dawson took over, the secretary of the A.F.A. was the present treasurer, Mr. Howard Gribble, who all his life has been associated with the game in Auckland.
