PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD

COMPLAINT OF NUISANCE At the Papakura Town Board meeting last evening there was much discussion on a complaint from Mr. Charles Renwick that refuse from the casein-precipitating factory at Papakura, and other rubbish had collected in Coles's Creek and was causing a nuisance. Dr. Page spoke strongly on the matter, stating that the nuisance was almost unbearable to those living nearby. It was resolved to notify the landowners along the route to clear out the creek to give free flow to the water, and to request the New Zealand Dairy Company, as owners of the factory, to provide some means to take the effluent to the sea without creating a public nuisance. The Works Committee was asked to report on the matter of public conveniences at Young’s Beach. The Railway Department advised that it had decided to have eight of the railway houses at Papakura connected with the water supply. A suggestion for the acquisition of an area of 70 acres or more near Manurewa for a South Suburban cemetery to meet future requirements for the Otahuhu-Papakura. area was received from Mr. Enos S. Pegler, of Manurewa, who suggested that representatives of the local bodies concerned should inspect the ground. The matter was referred to the Reserves Committee, members agreeing that the time was approaching when local cemeteries would cease to be adequate to meet requirements. A committee, comprised of the chairman, Rev. W. C. Wood and Mr. Nichol, reported having inspected the board’s water-supply catchment area that day. The position ;eemed quite satisfactory. No danger of contamination was indicated, and there seemed no reason for the board to increase its area. A request that a polling booth be provided in the city for the poll on December 21 on the question of rating on the unimproved value in Papakura was agreed to.
