IN THE MARKET PLACE
BRISK TRADE RECORDED GLUT OF GOOSEBERRIES Brisk business is recorded in the fruit sections of the City Marts. New season’s New Zealand fruit is offering freely. Strawberries, coming forward in large quantities, reached bedrock yesterday, when some chips went for as low as Sd. The market was still low today, but should improve with the weekend business. A further weakening at the beginning of next week will undoubtedly be followed by a revival, with the heavy demand expected for Christmas. The market has been glutted with gooseberries over the last few days, supi plies being greater than those registered at any time during the past ten years. Factory buyers have been operating sparingly on the lower-priced levels. Grapes are now coming forwai'd in small parcels, but low prices for this fruit are not expected to rule till well after the holidays. The Waipahi, with a shipment of approximately 15,000 cases of bananas, arrived from Fiji early this afternoon. Although supplies of Island fruit are not expected to be over plentiful for the holiday trade, the demand will be met with ample offerings of New Zealand fruit. Most varieties of vegetables are offering freely and meeting with a steady demand. The tendency of prices, if any, is generally downward.
