Auckland Swimmers’ Carnival at Mt. Eden
FIRST OF THE SEASON GOOD CONTESTS WITNESSED The swimmers of Auckland M^nt b c d , 9 ° od nur "hers at the Mount Eden Baths last evening, for the first carnival of the season given by the Mount Eden Amateur r™T, m T g Club > and provided an excellent series of events. Miss Edna Champion again proved s "°, d * or her opponents and .annexed the 100yds ladies' handicap in great style. Miss D. Magee, who recently returned from Sydney, did not seem to strike form, but swam a good race. Interest centred in the first appearance this season of Gordon Bridson, last year s champion and record intermediate swimmer, but he was handicapped out of the 220yds. although he was only just beaten for third place after a great swim. J. Magee was responsible for an excellent performance in th© 100yds breast-stroke handicap, when he won one second slower t .an the New Zealand intermediate record. The diving was of a high standard, and novelty horse-race was re-sponsible or a great deal of amusement, Te Monanui beating Tresham by a head. The waterpolo match, Mount Eden v. Ponsonby, was quite interesting and resulted in a draw, two goals all. The carnival was put through in excellent manner, and the officials are deserving of every credit in that respect. Results: 220Yds Handicap. —First heat: A. Keane (Helensville), 17s, 1; G. Bridson (Grammar). scr, 2; A. Rater (Ponsonby), 14s, 2. Keane won easily. Bridson gave the rest no chance, and left G. Bellam on 23s after the fourth lap. Time, 3.26. Second heat: R. de Loree (Mount Eden), 12s, 1; P. Brownlee (Waitemata), 225, 2. The winner won over the last lap. Time, 3.16. Final: Brownlee, 1; Keane, 2; De Loree, 3. Brownlee made the most of his start and went straight through to win by three yards. Keane was a yard in front of De Loree, and Bridson finished fast about two yards behind him. Time, 2.58. 100 Y ds Ladies’ Handicap. —First heat: Miss E. Champion (Waitemata), 6s, 1; Miss D. Grant (Grammar), 6s, 2; Miss E. Stockley (Grammar), scr, 3. Time, 73 3-ss. Second heat: Miss P. Page (Waitemata), ss. 1; Miss J. Bell (Waitemata), 3s, 2; Miss D. Magee (Parnell), Is, 3. Time, 755. Final: Miss Champion, 1; Miss Bell, 2; Miss Page, 3. As in her heat, Miss Champion led all the way and won comfortably. Miss Bell made a great effort at the distance and won by a touch from Miss Page. Time, 735. 100Yds Breaststroke Handicap. —First heat: J. Magee (Parnell), Is, 1; A. Clarke (Waitemata), 9s, 2. This club was absent from the list last season owing to poor support, and the initial venture this season should be a most successful one.
