Mr. Philip Snowden, who was Chan-1 cellor of the Exchequer in the Labour j Government, referring to the Labour; Party’s proposal for a surtax of 2s on j personal incomes from investments, 1 said yesterday that while he favoured j the principle of a surtax he did not j think it would realise anything ap- i proaching a yield of £80,000,000 He emphasised that in any case the tax should be used only for debt reduction. Sir John Simon, a Liberal lead :r, in a public speech during the week-end, condemned the suggested surtax. —A. and N.Z.
