SOVIET’S SCAPEGOATS OFFICERS STAND TRIAL By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Monday. The Riga correspondent of “The Times” reports that a trial of 20 officials of the Grain Department, the State Bank and other economic organisations has revived the dormant crime of economic counter-revolution, involving the death penalty, and circumventing the abolition of capital punishment. The prisoners apparently are scapegoats to the Soviet’s campaign against the famine in necessities, which is afflicting huge areas all over the countryQueues of thousands awaiting bread, flour and textiles frequent Moscow’, resulting in the authorities promising a series of the trials to inspire the officials to a sense of their duty to the public.—Times.
