LORRAINE EDDY PLACED In line with the policy of making a definite and vigorous search for new races for Christie Comedies, Lorraine Eddy, tall and blonde young lady from the legitimate stage, has been placed under contract. With work well under way for the new season of production for the Paramount programme, fountain pens and contract forms have been much in demand in the office of the Christie Studio. Miss Eddy is the third young lady to be signed in as many weeks, the first two being Jane Manners and Doris Lawson. It is considered probable that Miss Eddy will be much in evidence as leading lady for Jimmy Adams, but no definite announcement was made whether or not she would appear in the picture of other Christie comedians, such as Bobby Vernon, Billy Looley, Neal Burns and Jack Duffy. Screen tests made by Mr. Christie of Miss Eddy while she was playing in a Los Angeles Theatre, resulted in a contract for the young lady. She is the fourth golden-haired girl at this comedy studio, but even with her addition the brunettes are still in the majority.

“Ben Hur,” Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s magnificent epic of the times of Christ, will be presented shortly in Auckland. “Ben Hur” is a classic, a ; reverent handling of a reverent theme, yet it is not a drama of monastic j austerity or cold attitudes. It is a j warmly emotional story, a drama in ! which many minor themes are devel--1 oped, the tale of hate and revenge, : between Ben Hur and the Roman i Messala, the wiles of the Egyptian j siren, Iras, the gorgeous parades of beauty and magnificence that flood ! the screen. There are the chariot race, the sea fight, the miracles of the Mari of Sorrows, great tableaux from the masterpieces of the world —“Ben Hur” is a great picture on a great idea. Ramon Xovarro in the title role is most impressive, while Betty Bronson, May McAvoy, Francis X. Bushman ' and "Winter Hall, are among the play-jers-in the production, __
