Merritt for Australia?

There are all sorts of rumours floating around concerning young W. E. Merritt, the New Zealand cricket team’s googly bowler, says the Christchurch “Sun,” and it is believed that he has received offers to go to Australia after his return to New Zealand. Australia greatly needs a young googly bowler, as Arthur Mailey is getting past his best form now, and a young man is necessary in any Test side, for he can stand the strain of hard bowling far better than a veteran. Merritt is just this type of bowler. He has gained invaluable experience, and a slow bowler is essential in Tests. A glance over Test figures for games in Australia will show the large share that men like Mailey have borne in the games. The Gregorys are the men who attract the attention, but the Maileys get through the bulk of the work. Will Merritt go? If he does, the action of the Australian authorities will hardly be fair to New Zealand, for already she has been robbed of one of her best players—C. C. Dacre—by an English county. If her best slow bowler is taken, the country will have to make up a lot of cricket leeway.
