"NEEDED NECK LIKE SWAN”

CROSSING COLLISION VAN-DRIVER FINED “One would need to have a neck like a swan's to see the train coming.” This was the remark of a defendant, when charged with failing to stop at a railway crossing and with passing over a line when .it was not clear. W. V. Price, the defendant, had been driving a milk van over the railway crossing at Penrose when his van was hit by a train. He had a good view of the line, according to the prosecution, and he should be fined heavily. Price said it was the worst crossing he knew in New Zealand. “And 1 had to pay heavily for repairs to my truck,” he said.

“You’re lucky it didn’t cost yoy much more," remarked Mr. W. R. McKean. S.M., fining him £1 on each of two charges.
