I GOLD DIAL WINS CUP BILLIE CARBINE’S HANDICAP (Special.to THE SUN.) WHANGAREI, To-day. Beautiful weather favoured the Northland Trotting Club for its annual meeting, held to-day on Whangarei racecourse. There was a large attendance, and the track was very hard. Results:— 4 DARGAVILLE HANDICAP Of £100; li miles; 3.48 limit. 1— JOY BIRD (T. Shaw), ch m by Our Thorpe—Flora Elmo, syrs, 12yds, R. A. McMillan 1 2 POLLY’S PICTURE, limit, J. Shaw 2 6 CHARMING PRONTO, limit, W. Curry 3 Also started.—ll Warspite, 10 Petulant, 12 Nella Dillon, 0 Nelson Dillon, 4 Free Advice, 8 Carniu, 7 Great Ballin, 5 Ualgana, 3 Lola Reklaw. Six lengths each way. Times: 3.35 1-5, 3.38 4-5, 3.40 2-5. (Winner trained by R. A. McMillan.) Won Easily Carnui, Halgana and Charming Pronto were the first to become prominent, but going- through the straight the first time Charming Pronto held command from Polly’s Picture, Carnui, Halgana, Joy Bird and Lola Reklaw. In the back stretch Polly’s Picture was in the van, her nearest attendants being Charming Pronto, Halgana, Joy Bird and Nelson Dillon. Three furlongs from home the favourite took charge, and giving nothing else a chance came on to score easily by half a dozen lengths from Polly’s Picture, with Charming Pronto a similar distance away third. Favourite Capsizes j A mishap robbed the hot favourite, J Call Boy, of a good winning chance |in the second event. Colonel Thorpe | was the early leader, but at the end of a couple of furlongs Call Boy went to the front and showed the way up the straight to Colonel Thorpe, Billie ! Carbine, Gold Star and Roma Bingen. There was no change until well along the back, when Billie Carbine moved up second, and Gold Star also improved. The last-named was on terms with Call Boy on the turn, and the latter broke, finally capsizing his sulky and spilling his driver. Gold Star was sent out wide as a result, but Billie Carbine got through, going on to win by a length and a-half from Gold Star, with Roma Bingen five lengths further back.
