RATEPAYERS ORGANISE

MOVE AT BIRKENHEAD OPEN-AIR CAMPAIGN Forbidden the use of the council chamber the recently formed Birkenhead Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association is to launch a campaign with an open-air meeting. The interest In the association was shown by the large attendance at the meeting, presided over by Mr. Walton, who reported on the visit of a deputation to the Borough Council. The Mayor had questioned the wisdom of such an organisation, asserting that ratepayers’ associations were always antagonistic to the council. The council could manage its own affairs and was not in need of cooperation. Mr. Walton’s request for the use of the council chambers was refused. In view of the serious position of Birkenhead in drainage, as shown by Dr. Chesson, the association decided to invite the council to outline its drainage policy to the ratepayers.

A public open-air meeting is to be held early in February. The aims and policy of the association, will be placed before the ratepayers, who will also be addressed on various aspects of borough affairs.

It is hoped to organise a fruit and flower show to be held in the early autumn.
