PORTABLE SETS
A HOLIDAY ACCESSORY Going 'camping this summer? There you will need a portable set. You may not need one when you lie at your ease on the beach, the afternoon sun hot upon you, and watch the breakers come rolling in, the wind whipping each curving tip to spray as it falls in thunder on the hard packed sand. You will realise the need for one in the evening as you sit at the tent door, soft music from a portable receiver luring away all care and worry. This is true contentment. On the boat or in some rocky cove where fancy has led you, the tale remains the same. The portable set is a necessity to the camper, both as a medium for keeping in touch with the city through news sessions, and as an amusement factor.
WUcIC lICLO JCU JUU, lUC xcmains the same. The portable set is a necessity to the camper, both as a medium for keeping in touch with the city through news sessions, and as an amusement factor. The trend in portable set design is toward greater compactness rather than to a reduction in. weight. The modern set is not meant to be carried on walking tours, although a short portage should occasion no inconvenience. Motoring and boating are fast displacing the once popular hiking. This means an increase in the popularity of the compact set where light weight is of no great importance. For the home constructor, a portable set should present little difficulty. A four-valve set of the Browning-Drake design or a five-valve is needed if -loop reception is desired. A three-valve receiver -will give good results on a local station provided an aerial and ground connection can be made. No invariable rule can be laid down as the requirements of various listeners differ widely.
THE SUN is at present experimenting with a portable set weighing under 20 pounds, and being about one foot square. This will incorporate a loud-speaker of unusual design. If holiday trips this Christmas season are to be spoiled by rain as they were last year, a portable set at the camp will prove its worth in an exceedingly short time.
