At 11.1 a radio message was received from the Spirit of California, stating that the attempt would be abandoned, as the airmen reported that they were turning back, because of breaking an oil line after being in the air a little more than three hours. The plane landed on the Mills Field at 11.20 a.m. The airmen announce that another attempt will be made on
Captain Smith Friday if mechanics make the necessary repairs in time. Air Force mechanics had worked almost continuously since Sunday on making a new rudder for the airplane, which was tested under a varying load.
