HOSPITAL DOCTOR RETIRES
CHANGE AT TOKANUI To mark the appreciation in which # Dr. and Mrs. McPherson were held, a farewell social was tendered them at the mental hospital at Tokanui. After
eight years as superintendent of the institution, Dr. McPherson recently resigned owing to advancing years and failing health. The social hall had been nicely decorated for the occasion by the staff and others. Dr. Childs, actingsuperintendent of the institution, presided. He referred to their guest as a gentleman who always inspired confidence and had won high honour and eulogy as a teacher and an examiner Dr. McPherson’s services had been retained to the department as a consultant, so that he was not entirely severing his connection with the service. While he had been in charge at Tokanui their guest had earned the respect of everybody and had endeared himself to all. In token of this regard he asked Dr. McPherson to accept a smoker’s companion, a case of six Comoy pipes and a splendid Kaiapoi travelling rug Mr. A. White, one of the oldest members of the staff, then presented Mrs. McPherson with a beautiful eiderdown quilt and a travelling rug, as marks of love and esteem. Dr. McPherson, in acknowledging, the evidence of abundant goodwill, referred to the rapid strides made at Tokanui that go to make an up-to-date institution. It would be hard to leave Tokanui, but a rest was essential. During the evening musical numbers were contributed by Mrs. King and Messrs. C. Corboy and M. Barnett, while dance music was supplied by the Misses O’Halloran, Worth, Breeseman and, Rogers,
